World Communion of Reformed Churches visits WCC for deeper collaboration

A delegation from the World Communion of Reformed Churches visited the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 8 July to deepen collaboration and strengthen an already longstanding partnership.

The delegation met with WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay before meeting with WCC staff. Discussions ranged from climate justice to Faith and Order, ecumenical relations to Life, Justice, and Peace. The agenda also included communications.

“We share a longstanding partnership with WCRC, rooted in our common commitment to Christian unity, justice, peace, and the integrity of creation”, said Pillay. “Working together through theological dialogue, ecumenical advocacy, and joint initiatives, we support churches around the world in addressing the crucial issues of our times. Our cooperation reflects a shared vision of strengthening the ecumenical movement and bearing a united Christian witness in response to today's global challenges,” he added.

It's good that they are meeting and talking about climate justice and faith. Let's just hope that real help for ordinary people in the parishes comes out of the words, and not just meetings in Geneva. I wonder what exactly they discussed about "Life, Justice, and Peace".

It is good that you mentioned Life, Justice, and Peace - this is what concerns us most in the parish. I wonder if they were specifically talking about helping people who lost their jobs due to climate change, or was it just statements again? In Odessa, after the flood of 2023, many people are not waiting for a meeting in Geneva, but for real support from the churches.

Interest they discussed about Life, Justice, and Peace. But as Methodiou says, let something tangible come out of the parishes and not just meetings in Geneva. Here in Cyprus after the fires of 2023 we are still waiting for real help for those who lost jobs and fields.

It is good that they talk about "Life, Justice, and Peace", but really the most important thing is whether it will reach the ordinary people in the parishes - for example, to help the grandmothers in the villages with the heating or the young families with the children. What exactly would you like to see as real help from such meetings?

I like that they talked about Life, Justice, and Peace, but like Methodi said, it would be good to see it actually reach regular folks in the parishes. Here in our youth group we've been trying to organize simple climate justice workshops for families who've lost jobs after storms, but it's hard without any real follow-through from the big meetings in Geneva. Did they mention any concrete next steps for local churches?

Good thing they talked about Life, Justice, and Peace, that's a topic we know from our parish as well. But as Metodi and the others say - let something really come of it to the grandmothers in the village who solve the heating, and not just the meetings in Geneva. I wonder if they have specifically agreed on some joint assistance for people who have lost their jobs due to drought or floods.

I agree, Metodi, meetings in Geneva often remain on paper. For Life, Justice, and Peace, I would most like to see concrete steps - for example, to help parishes with programs for youth who do not run away to the city, or with support for senior gardens. What exactly do you expect from them?

Maria, you're absolutely right - the stories about "Life, Justice, and Peace" sound good, but if they don't reach Grandma Stanka in the village, who is wondering how to pay for wood for the winter, everything remains on paper. I would like to see at least some concrete help for parish groups that care for single adults - for example, to provide them with wood or pay part of their bills. Have you seen such a thing happen from such meetings so far?

I agree, Maria, this is exactly the most important thing - that it does not stay only in meetings in Geneva. I would like to see at least some common parish aid projects, for example for young families with baby packs or wood for adults. Have you yourself from your parish seen anything like this reach you so far?

Yes, Darina, Life, Justice, and Peace is also often mentioned here in Poltava at meetings, especially when we talk about gardens and vegetable gardens that suffer from drought. But specifically for people who lost their jobs due to floods or heat, we help more locally - through the parish kitchen and collection of clothes. And you in Odessa, how exactly do you do it in the parish?

Yes, Maria, that's right - if at least a few sacks of wood or a package of diapers don't appear in our parish after Geneva, the fairy tales will remain on paper. I would like to see some general program of parish workshops on energy efficiency, for example to teach people how to reduce bills.
