The all-Russian shrine - the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Tenderness" arrives in Kamchatkatranslated

August 11, 2026 · 1 min read

The image of the Most Holy Theotokos “Tenderness” from the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery arrives in the Petropavlovsk and Kamchatka diocese.

The Pskov-Pechersk Icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” was painted in 1521 by the pious hieromonk Arseny Khitrosh from the Icon of the Mother of God “Vladimir” and belongs to the Eleus icon painting type.

It was brought to the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery in 1529-1570 by merchants Vasily and Theodore during the abbess of St. Cornelius. Since then, more than once the icon has shown its mercy and miraculous help to the Orthodox Russian people.

The icon gained particular fame and veneration throughout Rus' during the Livonian War, when the 100,000-strong Polish-Lithuanian army was unable to take the city after a 5-month siege and 30 assaults on the Pskov Kremlin. In memory of the miraculous deliverance of Pskov from the siege under Tsar Theodore Ioannovich, the icon is decorated with an icon case.

During the War of 1812, on the day when the religious procession with the icons of the Mother of God “Tenderness” and “Assumption” took place, Russian troops recaptured Polotsk, and Pskov was out of danger. It’s good that the icon set off on the road again, especially to such a distance as Kamchatka. It is interesting that it was written off from Vladimirskaya in 1521, and then merchants brought it to the monastery under Cornelius. I remember how in 1812 they made a religious procession with her - and Polotsk was recaptured, it was always impressive.

Yes, Mikhail, I also remember that moment in 1812 - the religious procession and Polotsk was immediately recaptured, just as if by prayer. It is interesting that the icon from Vladimir was written off, and merchants brought it to the monastery under Cornelius. It’s good that she will now reach Kamchatka, our people are waiting there too.

Yes, it is interesting that in 1521 the icon was copied from Vladimir by Hieromonk Arseny, and the merchants Vasily and Theodore later brought it to Pskov-Pechersk under Cornelius. It’s good that now they’re taking us to Kamchatka, our people are far away there, but they’re also waiting. In 1812, there was a religious procession with her and Polotsk was recaptured - this always remains in the memory.
