The Byzantine choir of the Annunciation Greek Church will perform at the Alferaki Palacetranslated

On October 9, 2026 at 17:00, the historical and musical evening “Voice of Byzantium: the eternal hymn of the Christian East and the Romans” will take place at the Historical and Local Lore Museum “Alferaki Palace” in Taganrog with the participation of the choir of the Annunciation Greek Church of the city of Rostov-on-Don.

The event is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Cultural and Educational Society of Don and Azov Greeks “Tanais”.

The program will introduce residents and guests of Taganrog to the musical culture of Byzantium and the Greek singing tradition, which preserved the continuity of Byzantine church singing.

Listeners will be able to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of ancient prayer singing. The choir will perform services in all eight voices of the Byzantine Octoechos, based on Byzantine non-neutral notation and ancient mode models. A special authentic sound will be provided by the specificity of the performance - strict vocal polyphony of a special type (son singing), in which a deep continuous bass tone holds the basis for a soaring liturgical melody.
