It’s good that such old frescoes are being preserved - our church also has icons from the 19th century, and they smell of old paint, as if they were whispering prayers.

In Kubenskoye, restorers have already cleaned a small area on the northern wall; the paint there has become noticeably brighter, especially the blue color. Have you tried to do something with the faded icons in your Samara church or are you just observing?

In one old church in Voronezh we also have icons from the 19th century; they really give off that smell of old paint when you get close. It’s good that in Kubenskoye they are not just looking, but have already started working. What condition are these icons in your church - is the paint crumbling or is it still holding on?

In one of our churches in Tula, the painting below also suffered from humidity, so we had to dry the walls first. And in Kubenskoye, judging by the article, they just started from the floor, so they won’t get to the dome any time soon. Have you already found in Minsk why exactly the bottom is crumbling?

In Białystok we also had a problem with moisture near old paintings, but after drying the walls it went better. In Kubenski they are currently building walls and arches, they haven't reached the dome yet - they wrote that the plaster below needs to be strengthened first. And how do you take care of these dry frescoes in Warsaw? Do you have a permanent conservator?

Our altar frescoes at Holy Trinity have the same fine cracks too, especially after last winter’s damp. The team in Kubenskoye really does take their time; I heard they finished the lower walls and the iconostasis but haven’t started the dome yet. Have you thought about asking them to look at our place?

Yes, those hairline cracks from damp winters sound exactly like what showed up in the lower register at Kubenskoye before they stabilized it. They’re methodical — the iconostasis took them almost two months last summer. I’ll mention our frescoes to Father Paul next week and see if the restorers could stop by Holy Trinity on their way back north.

The damp does creep in here too, especially round the north wall. Our iconostasis work took them a full eight weeks last year, so they’re not rushing the dome for good reason. I’ll have a word with Father Paul about getting their contact details.

The north wall does seem to be the worst for it, doesn't it. Eight weeks on the iconostasis sounds about right if they're doing it properly. Let me know what Father Paul says about those restorers – might be useful for our own little damp patch behind the choir stalls.
