The intellectual roots of feminism’s antisemitism

July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

(RNS) — When people chanted “globalize the intifada,” I used to think they meant the violent kind, exported. I’ve revised that theory.

What’s actually globalized is a whole ecosystem of genteel intifadas.

There’s the bookstore intifada, where managers will place the latest anti-Israel books on the front table — which I’ve seen over and over in different cities. There’s the entertainment intifada, where A-list performers slip “Free Palestine” into award speeches . There’s the therapeutic intifada , where clinicians reportedly now screen out Zionist patients before they screen for insurance.

Last month gave us a new entry: the caffeine intifada, when a Brooklyn chain called Poetica Coffee served U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman his coffee, let his 7-year-old use the bathroom, and then, once he’d left, posted online that they’d refunded his $9.82 because his money “probably” came from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee .

It turns out that every corner of progressive culture has a price of admission, and Jews are finding it progressively more difficult to pick up that tab.

Add feminism to the list. That’s the case Kara Jesella makes in her new book, “ Feminist Antisemitism:…

In our church community, we also noticed how some “progressive” books about Israel suddenly appeared in prominent places in local stores. But the story with Poetica coffee and the congressman with a seven-year-old child is completely beyond the bounds, I don’t even know how this can be justified. It’s interesting what the author of the book says further about feminism.

Marina, the story with this coffee in Brooklyn especially hurt me - adults took money from a man with a seven-year-old child, and then publicly humiliated him. Here in Yaroslavl, thank God, I haven’t seen anything like this, but these “progressive” books are prominently displayed in stores—yes, that’s exactly what I’ve noticed, I’ve already noticed it several times. It's a pity that even feminism has slipped there.

You say it well, Dimitris, the story with Goldman and his 7-year-old child at Poetica Coffee is unacceptable. They took his money, let him use the bathroom, and then took him out on the internet. In the bookstores here in Nicosia I haven't seen it so strongly yet, but "progressive" proposals about Israel are starting to appear more often on the shelves.

This story with Poetica Coffee and the Congressman who was with his 7 year old just pissed me off. They charged him $9.82, forced him to use the bathroom, and then humiliated him online - what's so "progressive" about that? Here in Ruse, I have not yet seen such books in a prominent place, but if they start, I will think twice about where I shop.

Yes, the story with Poetica Coffee and the congressman who came with his seven-year-old son is simply beyond the pale. Taking $9.82, letting him go to the toilet, and then publicly disgracing him is no longer progress, but petty rudeness. We haven’t seen such “coffee intifadas” in Yekaterinburg yet, but books about Israel in a prominent place in “Read City” have really begun to come across more often.

That's exactly the case with Poetica Coffee and Congressman Goldman with his seven-year-old, which really turned me off. Taking $9.82, flushing it down the toilet, and then putting it on the internet as some sort of triumph is no longer progress, just plain pettiness. Here in Michalovci, I have not yet seen such books in the limelight, but the trendy anti-Semitic wave in progressive circles is becoming more and more clear.

Here in Warsaw, I also see these "progressive" books about Israel displayed right in the middle of the Empik store at Nowy Świat Street. But the story from Poetica Coffee, where they took $9.82 from a congressman with a 7-year-old child and then humiliated him on the Internet, is just plain rudeness, not a fight for justice.

The story with Poetica Coffee and Goldman with his 7-year-old child is indeed unacceptable. They took the $9.82, let him use the bathroom, and then put him on the internet to shame him. In the bookstores here in Heraklion I haven't seen it that strongly yet, but "progressive" books about Israel are starting to appear prominently.

Yes, Marina, this story with coffee and a child in the toilet really goes beyond all limits - grown men take revenge on a seven-year-old. And about feminism, the book goes on to discuss how the theory of oppression has been made into a convenient template into which Jews can easily be included. In Krasnodar, by the way, in one store they also recently installed a “progressive” shelf with such books right at the entrance, I even asked the saleswoman why.
