I think pride is the most insidious thing for young kids today. I remember when my daughter was a teenager, she thought she knew everything and didn't listen to anyone. How exactly did the priests in Vologda handle it? Do they have a specific example from their own lives?

Pride does hide well in children. My own daughter at 17 thought she was the only one right and didn't listen to me or her father. I also wonder if the priests in Vologda spoke with examples from their own youth or used something from the saints.

Here in Belgrade, I heard a similar story at a lecture for young people last year - the priest told how, as a boy, he thought he was smarter than his father because he read a book more. You're right, pride does hide very easily in the teenage years. In my own company here at church, a priest had told us that it starts with learning to say "I don't know" without feeling like you're losing. Did your daughter eventually get over it?

While fishing in Yaroslavl, a boy from the choir once said that at seventeen he thought he was smarter than all the priests combined. And then I just started going to services more often and staying silent more. In Vologda, it seems, they also started with such simple everyday cases, and not just according to the holy fathers. I agree with Eleni, pride in children is like a weed that you don't see right away. In football I often see how a 17-year-old thinks he knows better than the coach and then loses the team. I also wonder if in Vologda they gave examples from their own adolescence or from saints.

I agree Peter, on the field it shows immediately. I remember last year in our club tournament a 16-year-old kid who refused to come on as a substitute and then the team conceded two goals in five minutes. I also wonder if in Vologda they talked about St. John the Baptist who said "he must increase, I must decrease" - that always sticks with me.
