Let us constantly seek the protective mercy of the Mother of God, urges Patriarch Danieltranslated

October 1, 2026 · 1 min read

"Let us constantly seek the protective mercy of the Mother of God and pray to her", urged the Blessed Father Patriarch Daniel on Thursday on the occasion of the feast of the Covering of the Mother of God.

His Beatitude participated in the Holy Liturgy in the historical Chapel "Saint George the Great Martyr" of the Patriarchal Residence.

Father Patriarch Daniel presented the history of the feast of the Covering of the Mother of God, highlighting the help offered to people by the Mother of God.

"Orthodox Christians have always considered the intercession of the Mother of God to her Son, the Savior Christ, as a cover and shield of the faithful against enemies seen and unseen."

The miracle of Vlaherne The basis of the celebration of the venerable Covering is the appearance of the Mother of God to Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ and his disciple, Epiphanius, in the 10th century, during the reign of Emperor Leo VI, the Philosopher or the Wise (886-912), at an all-night vigil service in honor of the Mother of God.

Thank you for reminding me of that story from Vlahern. I always find it fascinating that Saint Andrew saw protection directly over people in the church, not somewhere far away. Up here on the mountains, one sometimes imagines such a thing when seeking shelter under the mantle of the Virgin Mary from a storm.

The bit about the veil being kept in the Blachernae church really stuck with me. It makes the whole story feel so ordinary and close, like the Mother of God stepping in right there among the people at vigil. Lucie, I like how you connected it to sheltering under her mantle during a mountain storm – that’s the sort of everyday picture that stays with you.

The part about the veil, the head covering, and the robe being kept right there in the Blachernae church makes the whole story feel so everyday, like she really was present among the people at that all-night vigil. Lucie, I smiled at your mountain storm image — we get those sudden downpours on our hikes here in Kansas too, and it does feel like pulling her mantle over us. Thanks for the reminder, Patriarch Daniel.

Yes, that veil and the clothes they kept in Vlacherna make everything so close, as if the Virgin was really standing among the people at the vigil. Here in Banja Luka, when we go to the glory of the church, I often think that we still need that same cover from troubles. Thanks for reminding me of the history, I was just reading it with my morning coffee.
