Priest Nicu Moldoveanu, Byzantine composer, conductor and musicologist, passed to the eternaltranslated

Professor Nicu Moldoveanu passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the age of 85.

Priest, teacher, composer, conductor and Byzantine musicologist, father Nicu Moldoveanu was born on October 20, 1940 in Brătianu commune, today Scânteia, in Ialomița county, in a family with 11 children. From childhood he learned the alphabet of faith and from an early age he discovered a passion for singing in the pews, which he never parted with.

Disciple and successor at the chair of Professor Nicolae Lungu, he became a lecturer, associate professor and professor at the church music department of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest.

He took conducting and music composition courses at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He gave numerous concerts, printed books of church songs for the pew, choral anthologies for male and mixed choirs.

His research work resulted in the publication of numerous studies and volumes of Byzantine musicology, critical editions, dictionaries, monographic volumes and volumes of religious poetry.

Eternal memory to Father Niko. His textbook on Byzantine music, which we studied piece by piece at the seminary, was clear even for us simple singers. It's a pity we won't hear his new compositions anymore.
