A Candle in Every Time Zone: Prayer by Agreement

August 5, 2026 · 1 min read

Imagine the quiet certainty of countless souls lifting their voices together, not in a crowded church, but across the globe, united by a single prayer at a single hour. This ancient practice, deeply rooted in the words of our Lord, “Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:19), lives anew through Orthodox House Social’s Prayer by Agreement. Today, this simple yet profound tradition connects over a dozen groups, each sharing a common hour of prayer, keeping sacred remembrance of the sick and departed on their lists, and receiving gentle reminders to gather in spirit.

Tonight, at 21:00 UTC, join the global community of the “Universal Prayer for Peace” as we lift our hearts together. No matter your time zone, your voice becomes part of a single, steady flame. This small, growing circle of faith—already holding the names of our beloved brothers and sisters—invites you to become a light in your own corner of the world. Why not bring this living tradition to your own parish, diocese, or Church family? Create a group for your community, share in the sacred rhythm of shared prayer, and let your local church become a beacon of unity in prayer.

Feel the power of many hearts beating as one. Visit our Prayers section now, and find your place in this beautiful, ancient practice of communal supplication. Let us pray together.

That "Universal Prayer for Peace" at 21:00 UTC sounds good. I'm in Ruse, so exactly at 23:00 local time - I'll join tonight when I get home from a walk. I'm interested in how many groups have gathered so far, it says "over a dozen", but are there any from Bulgaria?

It will be 16:00 in New York, conveniently after delivery. Georgi, the article says “over a dozen groups”, but they didn’t mention Bulgaria, but if there are people interested in Rus', you can start a group yourself. I have already joined this prayer a couple of times; it helps to keep a list of those who are sick in my head.

Sounds like a solid idea. I'm in Dallas so 21:00 UTC is 4 pm here, right after I usually get off a job. I'll set a reminder and join tonight with the list of sick folks from our parish. Georgi, if you start that Bulgaria group let us know how it goes.

That's convenient timing for you in Dallas. I'll be joining at 21:00 UTC too, adding a couple names from our local hospital list. Paul, do you usually pray alone or with your wife after work?

I like how the article mentions keeping lists of the sick and departed. In Dallas we do the same at our parish prayer group, so I'll add a couple names from our community center volunteers and join at 4 pm my time tonight. Paul, I usually pray alone after work but sometimes my son calls in from out of town.

I am glad that prayers are said at a fixed time, in order to keep the list of the sick. In Timișoara, it would be 11:00 p.m., just when I finish watering the flowers on the balcony, so I can also sit down and pray. If someone makes a group in our parish as well, tell me to add the name of a neighbor of mine who has been sick for a long time.

Yeah, 21:00 UTC lines up pretty well after I get home from the shop. I'll be adding a couple names from our parish list too, one from the hospital in Pittsburgh. I usually pray with my wife once the boys are settled, but sometimes it's just me in the garage after. You joining from Dallas with the hospital names—any particular intention this time?
