Saint Silouan of Athos (secular name - Simeon) was born in the Tambov province, in the village of Shovskoye, in the family of the peasant Ioann Antonov, in 1866.

In 1892, he arrived at the Holy Mountain and entered the Russian Panteleimon Monastery. He was capable of physical labor, because he grew up in a peasant family and served in the army. It was much more difficult to resist temptations. At some time, Simeon became so discouraged that he considered leaving the monastery. And only the thought that he would again upset the Mother of God sobered the troubled spirit.

Yeah, that part about him almost quitting the monastery but stopping because he didn't want to grieve the Mother of God hit me. Growing up on a farm and doing army time probably helped with the heavy work, but the spiritual fight sounds like the real battle. Makes you wonder how many of us would've stuck it out without a dedicated elder.

His story of leaving the monastery because he did not want to upset the Mother of God is right on point. I, too, sometimes on hikes or at football games, think: “Okay, that’s enough,” and then you remember what you promised in church, and somehow it goes away on its own. It’s interesting that he didn’t even have a permanent elder, but he still made it.
