Saint Silouan of Athos (secular name - Simeon) was born in the Tambov province, in the village of Shovskoye, in the family of the peasant Ioann Antonov, in 1866.
In 1892, he arrived at the Holy Mountain and entered the Russian Panteleimon Monastery. He was capable of physical labor, because he grew up in a peasant family and served in the army. It was much more difficult to resist temptations. At some time, Simeon became so discouraged that he considered leaving the monastery.
