Yesterday I listened to the second part of the podcast "Orthodoxie" - I was especially struck by the phrase about oriental images that are not just beautiful, but “speak.” In our parish, just recently, an icon painter monk said that even when painting the iconostasis in front of the parishioners, he tries not just to convey beauty, but to make the image “speak” through the details. How do you do this in Paris?

At St. John's in Portland, our iconographer says the same thing—when he was painting the Christ Pantocrator for the nave last spring, he kept stressing that the eyes aren’t just "nice" but meant to meet yours, like a conversation. Makes me wonder if our parish’s new iconostasis will carry that same weight.
