On the veneration and iconography of Samara saints: release of the “Cultural Prosvet” program on the GTRK-Samara channeltranslated

August 15, 2026 · 1 min read

The GTRK-Samara TV channel hosted the release of the cultural and educational program “Cultprosvet” with presenter Svetlana Zhdanova. The transfer was timed to coincide with the celebration of the day of remembrance of the Council of Samara Saints, which takes place annually on August 12. The discussion was attended by the rector of the Samara Theological Seminary, Archpriest Maxim Kokarev, and the candidate of philosophical sciences, associate professor of the seminary, ancient guardian of the Samara diocese, Elena Vladimirovna Deeva. The broadcast was dedicated to the history of veneration of the saints of God of the Samara region, whose names are included in the cathedral diocesan calendar. The program participants elaborated on who these devotees of piety were, how their veneration developed, and also examined in detail the features of the iconography of the Samara saints.

I didn't know the local saints' icons had such specific details worked out. Nice to see Elena Deeva explaining the iconography side – she always brings proper historical grounding to these things. Might try to catch the programme on catch-up this week.

I read with interest about Elena Deeva and how she explains the details of the iconography. I did not know that in Samara they came to establish so clearly the features of the local saints. I'm going to try to find this show online, at least for the part about their history.

Yesterday I saw that feature on GTRK. Elena Deeva explained beautifully how the icons of the Samara saints differ in detail from the general ones, especially in the case of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh who appears there. It's worth a look, at least the part about the iconography.

I also read what Elena Deeva said about iconography, especially how they chose the clothes and attitude of the saints according to their concrete lives, not according to general models. The show is easily found on YouTube if you type "Култпросвет Самарские сватьие". Did you manage to see it in the end?
