The Holy Icon of Panagia Machairiotissatranslated

August 8, 2026 · 1 min read

The Holy Monastery of Mahaira takes its name from the miraculous icon of Panagia Mahairiotissa. According to tradition, the icon was painted by the Apostle Luke and is one of the seventy icons he painted, after the Dormition of the Virgin. During the period of iconoclasm, an ascetic moved the icon from Constantinople to Cyprus, in order to save it. Click here or on the image below to go to content

I didn't know the tradition that St. Luke painted seventy icons of the Theotokos after her Dormition. It's amazing that this particular one made it all the way from Constantinople to Cyprus during iconoclasm. Our parish had a visiting priest from Cyprus a couple years back who mentioned Machairas Monastery; now I want to hear more about it.
