Primary School students talk about Saint Nikiforos the Leper with a book in Englishtranslated

September 6, 2026 · 1 min read

In a special and creative way, the 4th grade students of Paleochora Primary School, Selinos District, decided to honor Saint Nikiforos the Leper, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Inauguration of his Holy Pilgrimage Church, in Sirikari Kissamos. At the initiative of the English teacher, Mrs. Athanasia Lampropoulos, the students created a book of knowledge, in English, entitled: "Saint Nikephorus the Leper - A Life of Kindness", presenting, in their own way, the life and work of Saint Nikephoros. According to the teacher Ms. Athanasia Lampropoulou, who also took this commendable initiative, "..a special element of the book is the connection of religious tradition with science. The students, through the story of Saint Nikephoros, searched for information about Hansen's disease, explaining what leprosy is and how it is treated today by medical science. This is a good book made by the 4th grade children in Paleochora. I liked that they combined the life of St. Nikephoros with the science of Hansen's disease – this is how children learn how leprosy is treated today. Ms. Lampropoulou had a good idea.

This is a good book made by the children of the 4th grade in Paleochora. I liked that they also put in Hansen's disease, what it's called today and how it's treated – so they're learning science along with sainthood. Ms. Lampropoulou did well.

I agree, Evgeniya, it’s good that the children learned not only about holiness, but also about Hansen’s disease specifically - that it is leprosy, as it is now treated with antibiotics. In our church, sometimes they also talk about such saints, so that they would not be afraid of the sick, but would help. Have you read this English book yourself or just from the description?

I like that the fourth grade kids at Paleochora have mixed the life of the saint with what current medicine says about Hansen's disease. It is a practical way to teach them that kindness does not take away from scientific knowledge. Does anyone know if the little book can be obtained in PDF or is it only in the school?
