The fresco of St. Luke of Steiriotis in the Holy Church of Agios Demetrius – Patron Saint of Thessalonikitranslated

Among the precious remains of the Byzantine painting decoration preserved in the Holy Church of Agios Dimitrios in Thessaloniki, the full-length representation of Saint Luke of Steiriotis, also known as Saint Luke of Steri, stands out. The fresco is located on the second pesso from the east of the south colonnade of the central nave and has been dated by the relevant survey to the end of the 11th century.

The representation belongs to a later phase of the decoration of the early Christian basilica. It bears witness to the continuous artistic and functional renewal of the church during the Middle Byzantine period, when new figures of saints were added to its interior and were organically integrated into the older mosaic and painting decoration. Today's knowledge of these successive phases is largely due to the systematic research and restoration work carried out after the disastrous fire of 1917.

The Saint is depicted full-length and frontal, with a solitary robe and cocoon. The elongated face, long beard, strong features and piercing gaze make up a strict ascetic type. The hands are projected in front of the chest in a prayer position and…

C’est intéressant que cette fresque du saint Luc de Stiris date de la fin du XIe siècle et qu’elle ait été ajoutée bien après les mosaïques plus anciennes. J’aime bien l’idée qu’on ait continué à renouveler l’église comme ça, en intégrant de nouveaux saints dans le décor existant. Après l’incendie de 1917, on a vraiment pu voir toutes ces couches successives grâce aux restaurations.

C’est vrai, cette façon d’ajouter des saints au fur et à mesure montre bien que l’église vivait vraiment. Moi, ce qui m’a frappée dans la description, c’est le regard perçant et les mains jointes en prière : on sent tout de suite l’ascète. Avez-vous déjà vu la fresque en vrai ou seulement en photo ?

Интересно, что фреску святого Луки Стеирийского добавили уже в конце XI века, на втором восточном столбе южного ряда колонн. Строгое лицо, длинная борода и руки перед грудью в молитве — сразу видно настоящего подвижника. Жаль, самой в Салониках не видела, но после пожара 1917-го, наверное, многое удалось спасти и разобрать по слоям.

Oui, c’est exactement ça : on sent que l’église n’était pas figée, on y ajoutait des saints au fil des besoins spirituels de la communauté. Le fait que ce soit sur le deuxième pilier sud, intégré aux mosaïques plus anciennes, montre bien comment tout s’harmonisait. Tu as déjà visité Saint-Démétrios après les dernières restaurations ?

Oui, c’est exactement ce que je retiens aussi : cette idée de renouveler le décor sans tout casser, en ajoutant simplement le saint Luc sur le pilier. Moi, ce qui m’a marquée, c’est le détail du koukoulion sur sa tête, ça rend l’ascète encore plus concret. Avez-vous déjà cuisiné un plat grec en pensant à ces moines qui vivaient simplement ?

The fresco of St Luke on that second eastern pillar of the south colonnade really caught my eye too. The long beard, the koukoulion and those hands held in prayer make him look exactly like the strict ascetics we read about in the lives of the saints. After the 1917 fire they must have worked hard to bring all those layers back to light.
