Sunday Discipleship – The weakness of unbelieftranslated

August 8, 2026 · 1 min read

The disciples of Christ thought that by hanging out with Christ and being his disciples, they too would be able to perform miracles. But it turned out that this was not enough. They also had to have faith, which, however, if we judge from Christ's words, they did not possess. Many times Christ demonstrated in practice the power of faith. He also underlines it in today's Gospel reading, when he points out that a small dose of faith is enough to move whole mountains. The reason is simple: God acts with faith, for whom nothing is impossible, while man acts with unbelief, for whom many things are impossible, explains Apostolos Nikolaidis, Emeritus Professor of Theology at EKPA & President of the Institute Agios Maximos the Greek, on the show Sunday Apprenticeship.

That bit about the disciples thinking just hanging around Christ was enough really hit home. I've caught myself doing the same at times, going through the motions at church without the actual trust. The mustard seed line always makes me stop and ask if my own faith is that small.
