Archbishop Eugenios of Crete: I am deeply saddened for those imprisoned (VIDEO)translated

July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

It may have been the first time Archbishop Eugenios of Crete visited the detention center of the newly established Messara Police Substation, yet, as he explained in response to a question from Cretalive, it was not the first time he had encountered such scenes. He recalled stories of individuals who had found themselves on the dark side of life and justice. “I am deeply saddened for those who are imprisoned,” he emphasized.

During his fifteen years of service as Bishop of Petras and Chersonisos, Archbishop Eugenios frequently visited the prisons of Neapolis. There, as he recounted, he met dozens of individuals, many from Messara, whose stories left an indelible mark on his memory.

Among them was a prisoner who told him he had murdered his wife. As he described, after his priestly duties were concluded, he invited the man to participate in the memorial service for his wife, to hold the censer, and to perform the actions of the service.

That story about the prisoner holding the censer at his wife’s memorial and breaking down really stuck with me. Archbishop Eugenios visiting Neapoli prison all those years shows how much one-on-one time can matter. Praying the same mercy reaches the guys in Messara now.
