The celebration of the 205th anniversary of the Liberation of Monemvasiatranslated

Monemvasia celebrated its 205th Anniversary of Liberation from the Turkish yoke on Thursday, July 23, 2026. In the morning, in the Holy Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, within the castle town, a Doxology was held, presided over by the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Monemvasia and Sparta Mr. Efstathiou. This was followed by the speech of the day's celebration by Dr. Philology Mr. Manolis Stergioulis.

Afterwards, the Reverend Pastor celebrated Trisagio, in the area of ​​Elkomenos Christos square, and honors were given by the officials.

The history of liberation Monemvasia began to be besieged by the Greeks on March 28, 1821, when armed bodies, on the one hand Maniats, led by Tzanetakis Grigorakis, on the other Tsakons, under Georgios Michalakis, forced the Turks to shut themselves in the castle. The naval blockade began on Sunday, April 3, from Spetsiot ships. On July 10, the Greeks captured, after a fierce battle, the tower of the bridge, storming up to the walls of the Lower City. After this development, the Turks, on July 23, accepted the treaty of surrender that had been proposed to them, handed over the keys of the city to the envoy of Dimitrios Ypsilantis, Alexander...
