September 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Today, September 6, the Church, in the resurrection atmosphere of Byzantine hymnology, commemorates the miracle of the Archangel Michael in Chonai and honors the memory of the Martyrs Andrew, Andronikos the soldier, Andropelagia, Thekla and the Saint Neomartyr Lygeri of Chiopolitis.

Saint Neomartys Lygeri the Hiopolite Among the multitude of our heroic New Martyrs there are also many Christian daughters, who exchanged their confession to Christ with their lives and preserved their honor from the obscene and non-religious tyrants. One of them is the holy and glorious Neomartys Lygeri Hiopolitis.

She was born around 1804 in the village of Anavato on the martyred island of Chios, which experienced the harshest face of Turkish slavery. Her story hits close to home—born in Anavatos on Chios around 1804, just a regular island kid with parents scraping by under all that heavy tax and humiliation. I keep thinking how her mom and dad still managed to pass on that rock-solid faith that gave her the courage to choose Christ over everything. Makes me wonder what small things I'm teaching my own boy at home that might actually stick when life gets hard.

Yeah, that part about her folks being simple islanders who still held onto their faith through all the taxes, forced labor, and being treated like animals really stuck with me. It's a reminder that the everyday grind under the Turks didn't break everyone. Makes you wonder what kind of quiet strength they built into her from the start.

Yes, I also remembered how her parents, simple people from Anavato, managed to keep their faith alive in the midst of heavy taxes, chores and daily humiliations. Just like my mother who, even though she sells in the store all day, still manages to go to work without complaining. I wonder what it must have been like for an 18-20 year old girl to choose that instead of keeping quiet and living.
