The feast of Indiktos in Ioanninatranslated

September 4, 2026 · 1 min read

On the afternoon of Monday, August 31, 2026, the Great Vespers at the beginning of the new Ecclesiastical Year was celebrated in the Holy Church of Agios Paisios of Saint Caiaphas in the city of Ioannina, presided over by the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Ioannina Mr. Maximos. Today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the day on which our Holy Church marks the beginning of the new Church Year and honors the memory of our Holy and God-bearing Father Symeon of Stylitos, the Holy Forty Virgins and Amun the Deacon, as well as the Synod of the Blessed Virgin Mary theotokos and Virgin Mary of Pammakaristos, the His Eminence Metropolitan of Ioannina, Mr. Maximos, went to the Holy Church of Agios Paisios of St. Caiaphas in the city of Ioannina, where he officiated at the Holy Orthros and then presided over the Divine Liturgy.

After the end of the Divine Liturgy, the established Consecration took place.

Yes, that's exactly it, Aghiasmos always gives that little boost of freshness for the new year. At home in Toulouse we also do Great Vespers the day before and the Liturgy on the 1st, but often in smaller parishes, so it is more family-friendly. Have you planned something special in Strasbourg for the start of the parish season?

In St. Petersburg, we also always serve Great Vespers the day before and the Liturgy on the first of September, and after that we always have Hagiasmos. It’s nice that in Ioannina, in the same church of St. Paisius, they did everything in a row, with Bishop Maxim. We usually have them in different churches, but the feeling of the beginning of the year is the same.

Yes, the Aghiasmos after the Liturgy really gives that little boost, as you say. At home in Paris, at Saint-Serge, we also had Great Vespers on Monday evening, but without a bishop, just Father Nicolas and around twenty faithful. It is more modest than in Ioannina, yet the intention remains the same. Do you have grandchildren who sometimes come to Strasbourg for these holidays?

Yes, it’s true that the Aghiasmos after the Liturgy marks the kick-off. At home in Strasbourg, at the Russian parish, we held the service on September 1st with Father Dimitri, around twenty people and a little snack afterwards, nothing grandiose but it was enough to get off to a good start. Do you think that Mgr Maximos will often return to Saint-Païssios Church this year?
