The Byzantine and post-Byzantine heritage of Prespa is highlighted through projects of the Ministry of Foreign Affairstranslated

The Ministry of Culture implements in Western Macedonia a coherent plan of projects and actions, which connects the protection and promotion of the cultural heritage with the sustainable development perspective of the region. The tour of the Minister of Culture Linas Mendonis, in the Regional Unit of Florina, started in Prespes, a place with special historical and archaeological wealth, confirming the strategic political choice of the Ministry of Culture to invest in culture as a force for development, extroversion and cooperation. Focusing on the islet of Agios Achillios and Agios Germanos, the Ministry of Culture, in close cooperation with the Region of Western Macedonia, plans and executes a program of projects, with the aim of protecting, restoring and highlighting important monuments and elements of the cultural heritage of Prespa, as well as creating a strong cultural and developmental footprint for the local community.

Καλά κάνουν που ξεκίνησαν από τον Άγιο Αχίλλειο και τον Άγιο Γερμανό, εκείνα τα μέρη έχουν τέτοιες τοιχογραφίες που μένεις άφωνος. Ελπίζω να μην μείνουν μόνο στα λόγια της υπουργού, αλλά να δούμε πραγματικά αποκαταστημένα τα μνημεία και όχι μόνο φωτογραφίες για τουρίστες.

Το Άγιο Αχίλλειο το θυμάμαι από παλιά, όταν πήγαμε με την ενορία μας σε προσκύνημα. Εκείνες οι τοιχογραφίες πράγματι κόβουν την ανάσα, όπως λέει η Κέτεβαν. Μακάρι να γίνουν σωστές εργασίες και όχι μόνο λόγια, γιατί τέτοια μνημεία είναι κληρονομιά που δεν πρέπει να χαθεί.

The frescoes on Agios Achilleios really are something else. I remember seeing them years ago on a parish trip from Melbourne and they stuck with me more than most. Hope the ministry follows through with proper restoration instead of just pretty photos for the tourists.

I completely agree, Ketevan, the wall paintings in both churches are really special. I wonder how they will manage the moisture problem so that the frescoes do not deteriorate. Hopefully, the case will really move forward and not remain just statements.
