This is what we do by celebrating the anniversary of her holy sleep or transmigration, which although in this she is a little inferior to the angels, yet she surpassed to an incomparable degree both the angels and the archangels and all supernatural powers because of her closeness to God and because of the miracles written and performed in her from long ago.

Her death is life-giving, passing into heavenly and immortal life, and the memory of this is a joyous feast and a universal celebration, which not only renews the memory of the wonders of Theomitoros, but also adds the common and paradoxical gathering of the holy Apostles from every part of the earth for her solemn funeral, with heavenly hymns, with the angelic stewardships and choirs and functions for her.

I remember how at last year's Dormition service, the priest read this exact passage with the Apostles gathered from all corners of the earth. It felt concrete and close, like a big family coming to the funeral. Thanks for the article, it reminded me of how alive this holiday is.

That part about the Apostles gathering from all corners of the earth for her funeral really stayed with me too, Petru. Last Dormition when Father read it I pictured them all dropping what they were doing and hurrying like family does when someone passes. The article makes the whole thing feel so alive and close.
