Porphyry of Serbia: Humiliation is the only safe waytranslated

July 8, 2026 · 1 min read

Humility is the only safe way as our Lord Jesus Christ taught us, the Patriarch of Serbia emphasized. Porphyry from the celebratory Holy Church of Genesis of the Holy Forerunner in the Petlovo Brdo neighborhood of Belgrade. Theophilos collaborated with the Patriarch of Serbia. Bishops Hovstan Mr. Alexios and Novo Brdo Mr. Hilarion.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church in Serbia referred to the figure of the Holy Forerunner as well as his sermon which prepared the path of humiliation which was confirmed by our Lord Jesus Christ.

"Saint John the Baptist will show us that humility is what the Lord Himself said and confirmed - the only correct and normal path," he said, emphasizing that our soul becomes the abode of Christ only when we cast out our inner ego. "In any other case, if our self is not diminished and if Christ himself is not magnified in us, then everything is distorted, everything is distorted", he added.

The Patriarch of Serbia invited us to follow the path of repentance and to try to consolidate it in ourselves by applying God's commandments in our daily life.

Basil YoungThat line about kicking out our inner ego so Christ can actually live in us hit home. Too often I catch myself inflating that ego in the kitchen when things get busy, and everything does get twisted just like he said. Need to work on that repentance part in the everyday stuff, not just on Sundays.
