At the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in the local community of Kalivia Aetoloakarnania, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania, Mr. Damascinos, officiated at the Orthros Service and presided over the High Priestly Divine Liturgy, on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Preaching the divine word, he said: "Today's parable comes from the Gospel of Matthew and includes behaviors that, indeed, surprise and trouble us. Indeed, how can one explain the reaction of those who, although invited to a royal wedding, preferred the ordinary and trivial?

This is exactly what we read today in the Gospel: A king wants to celebrate the marriages of His Son. But those to whom he addressed, not only did not care, but abused and killed the slaves who carried this invitation. Then he addressed himself to all indiscriminately, in order that they might share in his royal joy. The palace was filled with all kinds of people. But one of them was found in the palace without the proper uniform. This angered the king, who gave the order to expel the inappropriate visitor and, in fact, to punish him...

I really liked that Despot Damascene pointed out how easily we prefer the mundane and trivial to the invitation of the King. The bit with the guest without proper clothing in particular bothered me – it's a reminder that it's not enough to just walk in, you also have to be ready. Thanks for the reminder, we'll think about it this week.
