Meeting of the Patriarch of Alexandria with the Mayor of Chiostranslated

On Monday, August 31, 2026, the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa met with the Mayor of Chios, Mr. Ioannis Malafi. Theodore II, in the context of his multi-day visit to the island. During the meeting, which took place in the Regional Unit of Chios, the Mayor of Chios offered His Beatitude a symbolic gift: the Sphinx, a timeless symbol of Chios and the Municipality of Chios.

It is a symbolic gift from Chios to a Primate who has dedicated his life to Orthodoxy, the mission, the offering and the ministry of man.

The Mayor praised the huge and multidimensional work of the Patriarch, His Excellency. Theodore II, his tireless presence and contribution in Africa, his constant concern for the people who are being tested and his significant contribution to the spread of the values of Orthodoxy, love, solidarity and humanity. A project that goes beyond the boundaries of the Church and touches people, society and the very concept of giving.

Nice to see the mayor of Chios giving Patriarch Theodore that Sphinx symbol. It’s a thoughtful local touch for someone who’s spent decades building churches and schools across Africa. Makes you wonder what the Patriarch’s schedule looks like on a visit like this.

The Sphinx is a nice local touch, though I always picture the Chios one as more of a medieval emblem than the Egyptian kind. Theodore’s done real heavy lifting in Africa—my cousin’s parish in Kenya still talks about the clinics he helped fund back in the 90s. Wonder if the mayor slipped in any local Chian wine with that gift?
