Kinshasa Theodosios: Every parish is a small vineyardtranslated

Yesterday morning, August 30, 2026, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Kinshasa, Mr. Theodosios, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Church of Agia Barbara Kinshasa near the Theological School. Elders and Deacons worked with him. The Metropolitan in his sermon, after analyzing the parable of the Gospel, mentioned that each parish is a small vineyard of the Lord and each believer is a root of the vineyard that must produce spiritual fruits, i.e. works good and pleasing to the Lord.

Yes, that image of the vineyard is one of those that stays. Here in Valencia sometimes we also seem insufficient for everything that needs to be done in the parish, but my husband and I repeat the same thing to ourselves: as long as each root produces even a small cluster, the rest is taken by the Lord. In Buenos Aires, do you have any specific project now in the parish?

Yes, that image of the vineyard also stayed with me, especially when on the bus route I see how the parishes around here make the most of it. In ours we are right now organizing shifts to clean and arrange the parochial school playground on Saturdays; nothing big, but each one contributes their cluster. And you in Valencia, what is the most difficult thing for you to move forward in the parish?

That's right, Kateřina, a small vineyard is enough. Here in Liberec, the church is not full either, but when the daughters help with the cleaning after the liturgy, you can immediately see that it makes sense. What do you add to those prosphora to make them so crunchy?

I agree, the vineyard is apt. In our church in Plzeň, it's the same—we're not usually full, but when someone bakes a pastry or sweeps after the liturgy, it becomes more tangible. I have a recipe for prosphora from my grandmother: leavened dough with a little oil and salt, baked on Thursday evening to be fresh. And what do you make for food after the liturgy? Something sweet or do you prefer savory?

Yes, I also liked that idea of the vineyard a lot, especially the idea that each believer is a root that has to bear fruit, even if it is small. Here in Seville we have a terrible time maintaining the children's catechesis during the week because almost all parents work late. In Valencia, have you tried putting classes together on Saturday mornings like you do with cleaning?

Methods, I liked the little vine thing too. In our Ruse parish "St. George" we are often just as few on weekdays, but when I fix the lighting in the church or bring wood for the stove in winter, I see that this is also part of the fruit. Where exactly do you get the fruit from your garden?

I agree, that vineyard is really spot on. Here in Ostrava, after the liturgy, I most often have something salty - for example, chopped vegetables with homemade spread butter or simple sandwiches with an egg. Your prosphora recipe sounds good, grandma's recipes are always the best. And what do you do with the cake you bake - do you divide it immediately after the service?
