Patriarchal Divine Liturgy in Sofia for the start of the new ecclesiastical yeartranslated

September 2, 2026 · 1 min read

On September 1, the beginning of the Indictus, the Ecclesiastical New Year, His Beatitude the Patriarch of Bulgaria Mr. Daniel celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Agia Kyriaki in Sofia. His Beatitude was flanked by the Theophilist Bishops of Branitsi Mr. Ioannis and Mr. Isaac of Velevousdi.

In his speech, the Patriarch Mr. Daniel recalled all the events of the past year that gave the faithful the opportunity to touch holiness in our days, such as the broadcast of the television series about the life and works of Saint Paisios the Saint, the reception in the Sofia Bishopric of holy relics, such as Saint Gabriel Urgebatze, Saint John the Russian and Saint David of Evia, of Saint Lazarus the Bulgar.

I was glad to read about the relics of St. Gabriel Urgebadze in Sofia. I have a small icon of him hanging at home, which my son brought from Georgia a couple of years ago. Lord help us in the new church year to be a little more patient, like Saint Paisius.

I was glad to see that the relics of St. Gabriel Urgebadze and St. John the Russian were received in Sofia. In our Sunday school lessons in Rostov, we were telling children about Saint Paisius; after that TV show, many parents later watched it with them. Lord help us to be more patient in the new church year.

I am glad that in Rostov, after the program about St. Paisius, the children in Sunday school recognized him. They also showed it here in Novosibirsk, and then my neighbor and I discussed how he patiently treated people—we should do the same in the new year. God help me.

Yes, I also read with interest about the relics of St. John the Russian brought to Sofia - I once went to Euboea and saw the monastery of David the Elder, I remembered the silence there. The part with St. Paisius you talk about is good, especially when you're stuck in traffic after your shift at the hospital. What do you think they will bring more relics this year?
