September 2: Saint Mamas is celebratedtranslated

September 2, 2026 · 1 min read

Today, September 2, our Church honors the memory of Saint John, Patriarch of Constantinople (†595), who was distinguished for his rare temperance and observance of fasting not only from food. Something that gave him the nickname Nisteutis, as well as the holy Great Martyr Mamandos the miracle worker, who was born in Paphlagonia to Christian parents, who were arrested and imprisoned. Before they died from the various hardships, Rufina gave birth to Mama, who was orphaned as an infant.

A rich Christian woman undertook his upbringing. Because the infant used to call this woman "mama", he was named Mamas. At the age of 15 he was captured by pagans and subjected to torture because of his brave action.

But the experience of the sufferings of the prison and the knowledge that he was a descendant of martyrs gave him courage and strength to endure the sufferings.

Finally, they executed him with a trident, thus surrendering his spirit to the righteous God. As the Synaxari points out: "Achmaῖos ὢn Triados ὼς πίστην Mamas, Achmaῖs triainis karterēῖ tetronomenos".

The story about little Mamma, who called his nanny "mama" and thus got his name, touched my heart. It's like he's from our street. I will also light a candle tonight after the service, especially for his parents who died in prison.

Yes, the story of the baby who called that rich woman "mother" and stayed with the name seemed the closest to me too. Like Maria, I will light a candle today at the service for Saint Mamas and his parents who died in prison. He is a saint who shows us that you can keep the faith even from a young age, without father and mother.

Yes, the story about the baby calling the rich woman "mama" and sticking with that name is my favorite part. The same as with Maria and Daniela - I will light a candle today in the church for both Saint Mamant and his parents. I wonder if we have an icon of him in any of the churches in Plovdiv.

Yes, I also really liked this story about the "mama" that the baby called and how the name stuck. I'm going to light a candle for him today, but mostly I'm going to ask him to help us, parents, to raise children with faith even when life is hard. Do you have a specific prayer to Saint Mamas that you say often?
