Seraphim of Piraeus: Gaze upon the Cross of the Lord that is raised for ustranslated

At the Metropolitan Holy Church of Agios Dimitrios of Neo Faliro yesterday, Sunday, September 13, 2026, in the morning the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Piraeus Mr. Seraphim officiated. During his sermon, His Holiness first referred to the person of Nicodemus who, although he held a prominent position among the Jews and belonged to the Council, recognized the divine origin and power of Christ. He was a "hidden disciple", who, fearing the reactions of the Jews, did not yet dare to publicly express his faith. However, as His Holiness noted, he will later appear with all the power of his being at the Deposition of the Lord, along with Joseph of Arimathea at the horrible Calvary.

"He approached Christ and asked for manipulation for salvation, because his heart was for redemption and salvation," he said characteristically, emphasizing that in this meeting the Lord revealed to Nicodemus the powerful word that remains throughout time the sacred measure by which man can understand himself, life and the world.

The part about Nicodemus showing up with Joseph of Arimathea at the Cross really struck me. It’s one thing to visit Jesus at night when no one’s watching, but to step forward at Golgotha takes real courage. Makes me wonder what finally pushed him to stop hiding his faith.
