28 Αυγούστου 1826: Η Μάχη του Πολυαράβου

Οι Μανιάτες νικούν τους Αιγύπτιους του Ιμπραήμ στην περιοχή Πολυάραβος του Ταΰγετου και αποτρέπουν για τρίτη και τελευταία φορά την κατάληψη της Μάνης από τον αιγύπτιο στρατηλάτη. Η Μάχη του Πολυαράβου κράτησε όλη την ημέρα και έγινε στις 28 Αυγούστου 1826. Ο Ιμπραήμ, με τα την αποτυχία του να καταλάβει τη Μάνη από τα δυτικά τον Ιούνιο του 1826, στη Βέργα και τον Διρό, επιχείρησε νέα εκστρατεία από τα ανατολικά αυτή τη φορά, δύο μήνες αργότερα. Με 4.000 άνδρες κατευθύνθηκε προς την ανατολική πλευρά του Ταΰγετου, υπό τη διαρκή παρενόχληση των Ελλήνων, που προκαλούσαν φθορές στο στρατό με την τακτική του κλεφτοπολέμου.

Η αποφασιστική αναμέτρηση δόθηκε στην τοποθεσία Πολυάραβος (75 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοδυτικά της Σπάρτης και 26 χιλιόμετρα βόρεια του Γυθείου), που βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 840 μέτρων στο όρος Ζίζαλι της οροσειράς του Ταΰγετου. Εκεί είχαν οχυρωθεί 2.000 Μανιάτες με αρχηγούς τον Παναγιώτη, Γεώργιο και Νικόλαο Γιατράκο, τον Ηλία Κατσάκο, τον Γεώργιο και Κωνσταντίνο Μαυρομιχάλη και τον Ηλία Τσαλαφατίνο.

Ο Ιμπραήμ εξαπέλυσε ορμητικά κύματα επιθέσεων κατά των Ελλήνων, οι οποίοι όχι μόνο τις απέκρουσαν με επιτυχία, αλλά, κατά τη διάρκεια της ημέρας, πέρασαν στην αντεπίθεση,…

My uncle used to say the Maniots were the only ones who kept turning Ibrahim away every time he tried. Reading about those 2,000 men holding the high ground at Polyaravos with the Yatrakos brothers and Mavromichalis in charge makes you realize how steep and rough that Taygetus terrain really is. Good they mention the exact distance from Sparta and Gytheio; helps picture the whole push from the east after the earlier failures at Verga and Diros.

My uncle told me the same thing about the Maniots basically being the wall Ibrahim couldn’t break. Those numbers really hit me—2,000 locals against 4,000, dug in at 840 meters on Zizali with the Yatrakos brothers and the Mavromichalis men running things. The part about the klepht warfare wearing them down on the march from the east rings true; my dad used to say the Taygetus trails are so narrow you could hold off an army with a handful of good shots and some rocks. Did your uncle ever mention any stories from the Tsalafatinos side?

The klepht tactics wearing them down all the way from the east sounds exactly like the sort of thing that would have worked up in the Taygetus.
