On September 10, 2026, within the walls of the branch of the Dagestan State University in Khasavyurt, an event was held on the topic “Religion as a factor in the harmonization of interethnic and interfaith relations and the prevention of radicalism among youth.”

With the blessing of Archbishop Varlaam of Makhachkala and Derbent, the rector of the church in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” in Khasavyurt, Archpriest Valery Galkin, took part in the event.

Father Valery addressed the audience with a speech dedicated to the role of religious communities in preserving interethnic peace in Dagestan.

Thanks for mentioning Father Valery Galkin. It has always been difficult in Hassavyurt with so many peoples in one place, so it is important that the religious communities work for peace and not divide. I am interested in what exactly he said about the youth, because here in Burgas we also see how radicalism is trying to enter the youth.

Father Valery Galkin hitting on the role of parishes in keeping the peace makes sense. In a place like Khasavyurt with that many different groups living side by side, it’s the local congregations that actually know the families and can talk to the young guys before things turn bad.
