Musical lecture “Melody of the Soul”translated

July 31, 2026 · 1 min read

On July 31, as part of the project “Consonances of Eternal Beauty”, a musical lecture “Melody of the Soul” was held in the Department for Supporting Active Longevity in the daytime conditions of the state institution “Territorial Center for Social Services for the Population of the Polotsk District”.

The librarian of the parish of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Novopolotsk, Olga Bakunovich, told visitors to the Department that the Holy Scripture testifies to the influence of music on a person’s state of mind. In Orthodox churches, liturgical chants are always performed by a church choir without instrumental accompaniment, because the human voice, created by God, is the most perfect of all musical instruments. The absence of accompaniment also helps parishioners to focus more deeply on the meaning of prayer. The Holy Fathers said that spiritual hymns drive away despondency and fill the heart with spiritual joy.

There was a viewing of video material on the effect of ringing bells on human health. Those present also learned that the Polotsk diocese annually hosts the “Heroic Chimes” bell ringing festival.

Andreas BeckerIt’s interesting that Olga Bakunovich emphasized exactly this about the human voice as the most perfect instrument - it’s really memorable. In our choir we also sing unaccompanied, and after a rehearsal we always feel lighter in our souls. And I would be happy to watch a video about bells, especially about “Heroic Chimes.”
