Mother Teresa documentary premieres in Kolkata on her feast day

September 7, 2026 · 1 min read

An international documentary tracing the life, legacy, and “prophetic path of compassion” of St. Teresa of Kolkata premiered Saturday on her feast day in Kolkata, India, drawing more than 200 people, including dozens of Missionaries of Charity (MC) nuns and novices.

“ Mother Teresa – Prophet of Compassion ,” produced by journalist and author Anto Akkara, was screened at the Auditorium of St Xavier’s College, Park Street, with Archbishop Elias Frank of Kolkata presiding over the premiere.

In his introductory remarks, the archbishop praised Akkara’s determination to bring lesser-known aspects of Mother Teresa’s life and work to a global audience.

“We are here, dear friends, not just to see what he has done, but to be inspired by Mother’s work,” Frank said, commending the journalist’s “passion” for making Mother Teresa known through the documentary.

“There are things that we may not even know yet,” Frank said, pointing to the film’s journalistic examination of events surrounding the Missionaries of Charity.

Хороший фильм, наверное. Особенно интересно, что там про малоизвестные моменты из жизни сестёр рассказывают — про события вокруг миссионерок. Жаль, у нас в Самаре такой не покажут, но хоть архиепископ похвалил работу Аккары.

Sounds like a decent film. The bit about the lesser-known events around the Missionaries of Charity caught my eye too – the archbishop mentioning there are things we still don’t know makes me want to watch it. Shame nothing like that gets screened round here, but good on Akkara for putting in the work.

Yeah, that line from the archbishop about unknown bits around the Missionaries of Charity got me too – makes you wonder what fresh details Akkara dug up. I’d queue up for a screening if it ever comes to London, especially after baking those lemon biscuits for our youth group last week and chatting about her work. Have you seen any of his other stuff?

Yeah, that line about the lesser-known events around the Missionaries of Charity stood out to me too. I’ve read a couple of Akkara’s books before and he always digs into the gritty day-to-day stuff most folks skip over. Wonder if the film touches on those early years in Kolkata when she was still teaching at St Mary’s – that part always sticks with me.
