Metropolitan Maximilian of Irkutsk and Angarsk paid a visit to the Brotherly Diocesetranslated

August 5, 2026 · 1 min read

On June 6-7, 2026, Metropolitan Maximilian of Irkutsk and Angarsk made a working visit to the Fraternal Diocese. On June 6, the Bishop visited the village of Dubinino in the Bratsk district, where Bishop Konstantin of Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk consecrated the Poklonny Cross, erected in memory of the flooded village of Dubinino and its inhabitants. The village of Dubinino traces its history back to 1605. Here was the Holy Trinity Church, closed in the 1930s during the years of anti-church persecution. In 1972, the village ceased to exist, going under water. At the end of the rite of consecration, the archpastors addressed the parishioners and all those gathered with welcoming words, in which they recalled the creative power of God and the importance of preserving spiritual shrines for future generations. After praying at the Poklonny Cross, the bishops visited the construction site of the lost church in honor of the Holy Trinity. At the end of the trip on the evening of June 6, Bishop Maximilian took part in a meeting of the Bishops' Council of the Irkutsk Metropolis, and on the morning of June 7, on All Saints' Week, he led the service of the Divine Liturgy in co-service with Bishop Alexy of Sayan and Nizhneudinsk and Bishop Konstantin of Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk. It is nice that the memorial cross was built in the place of the village of Дубинино, which sank in 1972. It reminds me of our old church in Zahle, which was threatened by neglect, and preserving such memories gives strength to new generations. Thank you to the bishops for visiting and praying there.

The cross in Dubinino sounds like a good, solid idea — that village had been there since 1605 and the old Trinity church was lost in the 1930s persecutions. Nice that both bishops went to the actual spot where the church once stood after the prayers. Reminds me how important it is to mark these places before they slip out of memory altogether.

The cross is a good solid marker, Mary — I hadn’t realised the village went back as far as 1605. It was thoughtful of them to walk over to the old church site straight after; my own grandmother lost her village church in the thirties and we still don’t have anything to show where it stood. Do you think they’ll try to rebuild even a small chapel there one day?
