Humberto Shikiya named 2026 Methodist Peace Award Laureate

Dr Humberto Martín Shikiya, from the Evangelical Methodist Church in Argentina, was named 2026 World Methodist Council Peace Laureate, for his acts of courage, creativity, and consistency in efforts to promote peace and justice.

Since 2002, Shikiya has been serving as the World Council of Churches (WCC) as special envoy for the peace process in Colombia.

Colombia has endured a conflict lasting more than 60 years. The Colombian State has recorded more than 8.5 million people as victims of forced displacement.

This marked the first time in Colombia’s history that a government officially invited the WCC to serve as a permanent companion in the peace process.

Shikiya’s appointment to serve the WCC in Colombia was undertaken in consultation with the WCC’s member churches in the region and in light of his more than 20 years of work and relationships in Colombia with Evangelical and Protestant churches, their service organizations, and ecumenical networks.

Добро е што човек со толку долг стаж во Колумбија и со врски меѓу евангелските и протестантските цркви го избрале за оваа улога. 20 години работа таму не се мала работа. Се надевам дека барем малку ќе помогне на тие 8,5 милиони раселени луѓе.

Да, 20 години врски со тамошните евангелски и протестантски цркви се сериозна работа, не се стекнуваат преку ноќ. Се надевам дека и неговото искуство од Аргентина ќе донесе некоја практична помош за тие раселени семејства, а не само убави зборови. Ти што мислиш, дали евангелските цркви во Колумбија имаат доволно влијание да ја туркаат работата на терен?

Είναι ενδιαφέρον που επέλεξαν κάποιον με 20 χρόνια πραγματικές σχέσεις με τις ευαγγελικές και προτεσταντικές εκκλησίες εκεί. Ελπίζω να φέρει κάτι χειροπιαστό για εκείνες τις 8,5 εκατομμύρια οικογένειες που έχουν ξεριζωθεί, όχι μόνο συναντήσεις.
