How classical education can be an antidote to AI

July 24, 2026 · 1 min read

(RNS) — In his 1939 essay “Learning in Wartime,” C.S. Lewis posed the question of whether it was still worthwhile to study while one’s country was at war. His audience was full of young men with a sense of foreboding for the safety of their country, the lives of their friends serving in the army and their own possible enlistment.

As a Christian thinker, Lewis answered in the affirmative, arguing that it was very appropriate for men to continue their studies while they could. “Life has never been normal,” Lewis writes, and therefore, the belief that education should occur only in times of normalcy is unfounded. No war can ever eradicate our pursuit of truth, meaning and happiness. Therefore, he argues, these should be pursued vigorously, even during times of imminent danger.

The advent of artificial intelligence brings similar feelings of foreboding and disruption. Some Americans fear they might lose their jobs to AI. Teachers, parents and administrators are urgently discussing how AI might change the classroom. Some view AI as a harbinger of welcome efficiency, whereby students can avoid the thankless grunt work of memorization and other tasks, enabling them to use…

Classical education has gotten us through crises before, as Lewis describes. I just wonder if teachers today still have enough time to really teach children the ancient texts and memorization before everything is just done by AI. In our church choir we notice how good it feels when you can get something straight out of your head.

Classical education also helped us in the wars, as Lewis says, but I am worried that teachers in Serbia can hardly process old texts and learning by heart. If everything goes to AI, kids will just click instead of thinking. What do you think, could parish reading groups help?

Yes, I agree with you, Danica - in our school, we can barely get through the Iliad and Saint Sava properly, and the children are already reaching for their phones. Parish reading groups could help, especially if we took one passage a week and really discussed it, without rushing. Have you tried something similar with your girls?

Yes, Lewis's text about learning during war is spot on. Here in Brno, at the rectory, we read the Iliad piece by piece with the children last year, and it really makes you think, not just click. It's a pity that teachers have little time, in our garden I would easily add one more evening a week for such reading.

Yes, Stefan, the thing about memorizing is really a point. In the choir in our community, it always helps me if I still have the old hymns in my head instead of looking everything up. I don't know whether the teachers find the time for this today - our grandchildren are already complaining that the school day is very busy.
