I would like to try iconography. What do I need for this?translated

Greetings! Recently, I often think about the desire to engage in iconography. I am unsure whether this will lead to something substantial, and do not intend to devote myself entirely to it – more so, I would like to try it out. I have heard that iconography requires certain qualities from a person, and that not everyone can just decide to start doing it. What does the Orthodox Church say about this? Can it be considered a sin in God's eyes?

The desire to try your hand at iconography in itself is not a sin. On the contrary, it can be a beneficial endeavor if approached with due reverence. In the Orthodox tradition, iconography is not merely the art of painting religious subjects; it is a form of ecclesiastical service and spiritual labor. An icon is more than an illustration—it is a reflection of the heavenly world, and its creation requires not only artistic skills but also a certain state of mind.

There are specific requirements for an iconographer. The Stoglav Synod prescribed that the painter should be "humble, meek, reverent," maintaining "spiritual purity" and living in "fasting and..."

It is beautiful that Alexandra only wants to try without great plans. The priest clearly said that it is not a sin to approach with reverence and that an iconographer should be humble and in fasting, as Stoglav foresaw. I would first ask if there is any course or experienced iconographer in our parish who accepts beginners, so I can see how this actually looks in practice.
