Is it a sin to buy chess made from bread?translated

October 2, 2026 · 1 min read

Reader question:

Hello, on the Internet I found a handmade chess set made from bread. Very beautiful and expensive, now I ask myself: is this considered a sin, is it possible to purchase, make, use such chess?

Sofia

Priest's answer:

Priest Evgeniy CHEBYKIN

Hello, Sofia.

Thank you for the interesting question!

All my grandparents were children of war. And each of them taught me, when I was little, never to leave bread crumbs on the table, but to eat them or give them to the birds. Since they experienced first-hand what hunger is, they would hardly be delighted if I, for example, bought myself items similar to those you write about in your letter.

But times change, Sofia, and today you can decide for yourself whether you need such chess or not. Although the very fact that you are asking such a question already speaks volumes. Maybe you really shouldn't do this?

Please try to regularly attend church services, go to confession, partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, read wise books and do good deeds.

May the Lord help you!

My grandma grew up during the Depression and still can't stand seeing bread wasted, so the priest's story about his grandparents hit home. Those chess pieces sound pretty but I'd feel weird playing with something made of bread. Maybe just get regular wooden ones instead?
