Faith under fire: Catholic military chaplains through America’s wars

July 29, 2026 · 1 min read

As the United States commemorates the 251st anniversary of the military chaplaincy, established on July 29, 1775, at George Washingtonʼs request, the story of Catholic priests in uniform reveals a long tradition of faith, courage, and sacrifice.

Xenia PhillipsMy uncle Frank served in Korea and always spoke with real respect about the Catholic chaplain who came around the prison camp — said the man would say Mass with a piece of bread from their rations and it kept a lot of the boys going. Interesting to read that the tradition goes all the way back to Father John Carroll in 1775. Thank you for the article.

James BennettMy uncle Frank's story matches what the article says about Korea — he told us the chaplain used ration bread for Mass in the camp and it gave the men something solid to hold onto. Nice to see Father John Carroll mentioned too; didn't realize the tradition went back that far. Thanks for posting this.
