Today we remember Bishop Sergius (Sokolov), whose episcopal service began in Kazan. From May 11, 1888 to February 2, 1891, he was Bishop of Cheboksary, vicar of the Kazan diocese. In the world, Bishop Sergius bore the name Ivan Ivanovich Sokolov.

It is interesting that he began his priestly ministry in Kazan, and then became the bishop of Cheboksary. Ivan Ivanovich Sokolov is such a simple worldly name, like our neighbor from Vinnytsia. And you don't know why he was then transferred to Chernihiv?

It is interesting that you mentioned Vinnytsia - my relatives lived there, they had really simple names, like Ivan Ivanovich's. As for the transfer to Chernihiv, it seems that this happened already in 1893, when he became the bishop of Chernihiv and Nizhyn. Maybe one of the older parishioners remembers a more precise reason?

It is interesting that in the world he was just Ivan Ivanovich Sokolov, like our neighbor Uncle Vanya from Poltava. Olga, don't you remember how many years he served in Chernihiv? Maybe one of the elders in our parish heard about him from their grandmothers.

Yes, Galina, indeed, the name is quite simple, like our uncle Vanya's. He served in Chernihiv from 1893 to 1898, five years. My late mother-in-law from the Nizhyn region mentioned that during his time many churches were renovated in the diocese. Where are you from, from Poltava?

Yes, Galina, the name is really very ordinary, like that of our neighbor, Uncle Vanya. But in Chernihiv, it seems, he also helped to open a school for girls at the diocese - my mother-in-law from those parts told me. Have you been in our parish for a long time?
