Saint Innocent (Veniaminov, 1797-1879) dedicated his life to enlightening the pagan peoples of Alaska, Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Eastern Siberia, and the Far East with the light of Christ's faith.

In addition, for 11 more years, he served as Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, during which time he also demonstrated himself to be a remarkable church leader.

Saint Innocent passed to the Lord on March 31, 1879, on Great Saturday, and was buried in the Church of the Holy Spirit of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

On October 6, 1977, the Russian Orthodox Church glorified Innocent (Veniaminov) among the saints. His memory is celebrated twice a year: on April 13 (March 31 according to the old calendar) – the day of his blessed death, and on October 6 (September 23 according to the old calendar) – the day of his glorification.

Interesting that he departed on Great Saturday – it must have been very symbolic for those saying their farewells. I remember reading about his work on Unalaska, especially how he convinced the Aleuts to abandon polygamy and slavery. This shows that faith really changes people's lives, even in the remotest parts of the world.

Yes, leaving on Holy Saturday is truly memorable. And the article about Unalaska also impressed me - how one person was able to convince the Aleuts to immediately abandon both polygamy and the killing of slaves. This is probably the strongest evidence that faith truly changes life.
