The sun's rays breaking through the clouds above the cathedral give such a calm, pure glow. I always love how light can just change an entire place.

Yes, these rays show the texture on the towers nicely.

Yes, these rays bring out the texture on the towers well. I usually go there at 9.00 on Sunday, because after 10.30 it's already crowded.

The light really picks out the brick on that left roof. Are the weekday opening hours the same in winter or do they change?
P

That light looks good on the concrete. I would like to see live how it falls on that north facade after the overhaul.
I read The Egyptian Crutch last night before bed. It stuck in my head as an old man said that true prayer begins only when you are no longer looking for anything for yourself. This morning, on my way to work, I thought that this is exactly what happens to me too rarely. In the evening I will try to read a little more, after I put the little one to bed.

The White Church stands on the other side, already at dusk. The light from the windows falls on the water quietly and evenly, and this makes everything around seem calmer.

Yes, this is the church on the islet of Vranianina. I know that the fishermen there still leave a few candles at the entrance before leaving with the boats at early dawn.

Yes, the light on the water is very even.

Yes, it's on Lake Skadar. The photo clearly shows how the stone of the walls almost merges with the water, and the roof slightly shines from the remnants of light.
The church looks peaceful against the green trees. The sun illuminates it well and everything is peaceful.

The dome and the bricks are really clearly visible. And is the church open to people during the week, say on Thursday afternoons, or only on days of service?

You can clearly see the cross on the old roof. This church is near Patras, in the region of Achaia, where buses to the stadium often pass in the morning.

The brick looks so worn out that it looks like it's going to fall on its own. Is it a parish from here or further away?

The cross really stands out clearly in that light. The church is dedicated to St. Kliment Ohridski, so there is often a liturgy there on Sundays.
A few of us from the parish are heading out next Saturday for a quick pilgrimage to the little monastery up the coast. I’m sorting the cars and packing some sandwiches and fruit for the drive. Should be a good day, praying there with the group before we grab fish and chips on the way back.
L
Laura Baker
That sounds perfect, Luke. I’ll bring a big thermos of coffee for the drive up — last time we went that way the monastery’s guestmaster mentioned they were low on it after their last group. Count me in for the fish and chips stop too.
Serbian Orthodox Church organizers have announced a Winter Youth Retreat set for 2026 that promises faith formation, new friendships, and wholesome activities for college students. The program builds on similar successful gatherings that draw young people from across the country and diaspora. At the same time the Orthodox Church in America Holy Synod released a clear statement opposing assisted suicide and euthanasia, reaffirming the Church’s consistent teaching on the sanctity of life. In Romania the Nativity Fast begins on 15 November, with fourteen days when fish is allowed, giving families a practical rhythm for the coming weeks. The Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel met first-graders in Pernik and spoke simply about personal responsibility and care for others. These quiet initiatives show steady attention to the spiritual needs of different generations. May the Lord strengthen the youth who will gather in Serbia and bless the work of the American, Romanian, and Bulgarian churches.
The Orthodox Church in America has released a clear statement rejecting assisted suicide and euthanasia, calling both incompatible with the Christian understanding of life as a gift from God that must be respected until its natural end. The synod underlined the need for better palliative care, stronger family support, and genuine compassion rather than ending life prematurely. At the same time Romanian Patriarch Daniel told a conference on pseudo-spirituality that the future of every person rests in God’s hands, not in human techniques that promise control over death. In Bulgaria Metropolitan of Sliven warned against outside hierarchs meddling in local church affairs, while the Serbian Church announced its winter youth retreat focused on faith, friendship, and simple shared activities for young people. The Greek Church marked the feast of St George Karslides in Drama with quiet local devotion. These varied voices show a common concern for protecting both human dignity and the integrity of church life.
The Romanian Orthodox Church reburied the remains of its founder, Priest Nicolae Gherman, at Rohia Monastery today with quiet solemnity. The small ceremony drew local clergy and faithful who remember him as the monk who planted the first seeds of monastic life there decades ago. In Bulgaria the newly finished Holy Trinity church in Dragor awaits consecration by Grandfather Nicholas, while Metropolitan of Sliven spoke firmly against outside meddling in Church affairs. From the Church of Greece came word that the long project of Metropolitan of Nea Ionia reached its goal after seven and a half years, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate continues practical help through free medical care offered to Greeks on Imbros and Tenedos by the Athens Medical Group. May the communities of Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Constantinople be granted steady hands and clear purpose in the days ahead.

Where exactly is this church? On the walls it can be seen that the masonry is quite rough, typical of the 14th-15th century.

Metropolitan of Nea Ionia marked the end of seven and a half years of service in Greece, stating that the goals set at the beginning of his ministry have now been fulfilled. In Romania the Philanthropy Federation arranged free eye examinations for a hundred elderly residents of Alba County. The Serbian Church consecrated the renovated Ascension of the Lord church in Tolvadia, while the Bulgarian Metropolitan of Sliven spoke against external interference in local church matters. The Ecumenical Patriarchate held its first Discover Orthodoxy gathering in Coventry and announced the thirty-third session of the Benelux Orthodox Episcopal Assembly. These varied activities show steady pastoral work across jurisdictions. Let us hold the faithful of Nea Ionia, Alba County, Tolvadia, Sliven, and Coventry in our prayers today.
Serbian Orthodox Church organizers have announced a major college youth retreat set for 2026. The gathering will focus on faith, friendship, and fun, drawing young adults from across the Serbian diaspora and homeland for prayer, talks, and shared activities during the winter season. In related news, the Orthodox Church in America’s diocesan seminarians marked the election of Bishop Gerasim with a special celebration, while the Romanian Orthodox Church held its first Divine Liturgy inside a newly built wooden church in Japan. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church saw Metropolitan of Sliven speak out against external interference in its internal affairs. These stories show steady attention to the formation of the next generation and to quiet but meaningful milestones in different corners of the Church. May readers keep the Serbian youth planning their retreat, the seminarians, the new Japanese parish, and the Bulgarian hierarchs in prayer.

The Orthodox Church in America has issued a formal statement from its Holy Synod firmly rejecting assisted suicide and euthanasia as incompatible with Christian teaching on the sanctity of life. The document underscores the Church's commitment to caring for the suffering through prayer, medical support, and community presence rather than ending life prematurely. Meanwhile the Romanian Orthodox Church held its Autumn Pastoral-Missionary Conference in Prahova, where priests examined the role of women in both family and parish life. In Bulgaria the new priest at St. Archangel Michael in Pazardzhik assumed his duties, bringing fresh energy to the local congregation. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch reported that an abbess has been sharing practical guidance to help establish new monasteries across the archdiocese. These developments show different corners of the Orthodox world quietly addressing concrete challenges in ethics, pastoral work, and monastic growth. What similar discussions or statements has your own parish or diocese taken up lately?

The Serbian Orthodox Church consecrated the renovated Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Tolvadia this week, restoring a local landmark for regular worship after careful work on its structure and interior. In parallel, the Romanian Orthodox Church welcomed the Polish Orthodox Church’s new burial rites developed for stillborn and unborn children, offering families a clear liturgical path for mourning. The Orthodox Church in America released a synodal statement clarifying the Church’s stance against assisted suicide and euthanasia, drawing on patristic teaching. Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church saw a new priest assigned to St. Archangel Michael parish in Pazardzhik, and Metropolitan of Sliven spoke against external interference in its internal affairs. These developments show steady, practical steps taken by different Orthodox jurisdictions to preserve sacred spaces, support the grieving, guard moral teaching, and maintain order in daily church life.

I am especially happy for the Ascension Church of Tervelia. As a driver, I often pass by these places and I know how important it is to have a regular mass there, not just a holiday. For the newly appointed priest in Pazardzhik at "St. Archangel Michael" - may his service be easy, especially now that the metropolitan of Sliven has clearly said that outsiders should not get involved.
Bulgarian nun Serafima has reposed in the Lord after a long monastic life. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church marked her passing with quiet prayers at several monasteries, including an all-night vigil held at Kremikovtsi Monastery of St George the Victorious. In related news, the Holy Synod there reminded the faithful that believers should not appoint themselves as judges and declare anathemas. Meanwhile the Serbian Orthodox Church consecrated the renovated Church of the Ascension in Tolvadia, and the Romanian Orthodox Church helped establish new burial rites for stillborn and unborn children. From the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, an abbess shared practical guidance on how to found new monasteries. May these local churches find steady strength in the daily round of prayer and service.

Yesterday evening, as usual, I knelt at the icon corner. I lit a lamp in front of Our Lady and Saint. Nicholas, and then together with my son Tomek we said evening prayers. It took us a while because our grandson wasn't asleep yet and he also wanted to blow the candle.

On Saturday, my wife and daughter went to a small monastery near Yekaterinburg. It was quiet there, almost no one was there, only a few nuns were singing in the church. For the first time, my daughter stood in my arms for the entire service, and then we just walked around the yard and drank tea with monastery gingerbread before heading back.

Last night after I closed the door to the pension I passed the church about half past eight. The air was warm, smelled of mowed grass, and crickets could be heard. I stopped for a minute at the gate, lit a small candle to Saint James, the brother of the Lord, and thought that tomorrow morning I would come to the service earlier.
