Diocesan Media Office Invites Submission of Holy Transfiguration 2026 Photos
Orthodox Church in America · Read the article →
A group of young pilgrims from Nordic countries and Greenland recently arrived at a small shrine in a Romanian village to pray and walk the local holy sites together. The visit coincided with preparations around the Forefeast of the Transfiguration at several Romanian monasteries and the blessing of a new reliquary by Patriarch Daniel for the newly canonized nuns of Văratec Monastery. At the same time the Bulgarian Diocese of Vratsa received the Hawaiian icon of the Mother of God, drawing crowds of faithful who came to venerate it. In Greece the Holy Metropolis of Kitros organized its own pilgrimage tour to Mount Athos, giving participants a chance to follow ancient monastic paths.
These separate journeys show how ordinary believers still seek out quiet corners of the Church calendar. A modest wooden cross stands at the edge of the Romanian village where the Nordic group lit candles each evening.

Fasting is always a chore at work. Today in the kitchen again I had to refuse to taste the sauce with the meat that they cooked for lunch, and instead I took only bread with tomatoes. How do you handle it when you have shifts and don't have time to cook at home? Tomorrow, my husband and I are going to mass at St. Fabián, so I would like to stay.

The light at the end of that country road pulls your eye straight to the church. Makes the whole place feel quiet and settled.

The church looks old, probably pre-revolutionary, with a simple hipped dome without unnecessary decorations. The brickwork is clearly visible even at this distance.

The light falls directly on the dome and makes it stand out. The church is dedicated to Agios Nikolaos.

Yes, the light falls directly on the dome. Can you tell me where this was filmed?

Yes, the light falls well on the dome. I would like to see this road in person.

The old bell in the belfry. The light falls so calmly that one wants to just stand and listen to the silence.
Stare zvono u zvoniku. Svetlost pada tako mirno da čovek poželi da samo stoji i sluša tišinu.

The bell looks deeply cracked underneath, as if it has been rung a thousand times. In our parts of Magnesia the old steeples have similarly thick layers of lime that collect moisture every winter.

I see that the bells have some minor cracks on the edges. The church is dedicated to Saint Demetrius, so we often light the lamp right in front of his icon.
E

The crack on the bell looks pretty deep, like Ana said about the smaller ones on the edges.

Marija Ristić
I can see that the bell is slightly tilted on one side, as if it was hung many decades ago and has never been moved.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch published meditations on the Transfiguration that draw direct links between monastic prayer and the daily work of parish families. At the same time the Romanian Orthodox Church saw Metropolitan Hariton speak at the consecration of the seminary at Neamț Monastery, reminding everyone that the saints gather clergy and laity together in one living tradition. In the Orthodox Church in America parish leaders in Wilkes-Barre have begun forming an inter-parish association to share practical resources, echoing the way monasteries have long supplied books, counsel, and trained cantors to surrounding churches. Meanwhile the Serbian Orthodox Church remembered protodeacon professor Dr. Miloš Erdeljan, whose scholarly work grew out of years spent in monastic libraries yet served countless parish priests and teachers. These examples show how the quiet rhythm of monastic life quietly feeds the ordinary tasks that keep parishes running.

In the afternoon I went to the church yard to water the basil and geraniums. The leaves had wilted a bit from the sun, but after the water they looked better. Eleni the neighbor also came with her little grandson and together we collected the dry branches from the roses.

Last weekend I drove out to the little monastery near Wakefield. The nuns had fresh bread from their oven after the liturgy and I sat on the bench by the garden watching three chickadees fight over the feeder. The quiet there always sticks with me on the drive back to Ottawa.
