The Monk Mark the Ascetic 1 is one of the most famous Egyptian fathers. His life lasted more than a hundred years: he was a contemporary of both those holy fathers who lived at the end of the 4th century and those who lived at the beginning of the 5th century. For this reason, it must be assumed, there was some difference in the legends about the time of his life. His great holiness and spiritual perfection are testified by the Monk Macarius of Alexandria, who was the presbyter of the church of the Nitrian Kelliots, to which the Monk Mark came from the desert to receive the Holy Mysteries. “I never gave,” says Saint Macarius, “the Divine Mysteries to Mark the Ascetic, but the angel from the altar gave it to him invisibly, but I saw just the fingers of the hands of the giver” 2 . The writings of St. Mark are testified by Nicephorus Callistus Xanthopulos, who, in addition to his eight words mentioned by Patriarch Photius, attributes to him thirty-two others, teaching every path of ascetic life, but, unfortunately, not found today. His works are also mentioned by the Venerable Martyr Peter of Damascus, Saint Gregory of Thessalonites, Saint Gregory of Sinaite, Saint Callistus, Patriarch of Constantinople, and many other fathers who, having read them, exhort us to read them. The Orthodox Church commemorates the Monk Mark the Ascetic on the 5th day of March, preaching his fasting works, and spiritual wisdom in words, and the grace of miracles given to him from above 3 .
