Letters from St. Paisiy Velichkovsky to the Kosh Ataman of the Zaporozhian Troops Peter Kalnyshevsky, stored in the materials of the Kosh archive of the Zaporozhye Sich 8, while remaining virtually unknown to the scientific community, at the same time they are a valuable source that significantly complements the information both about Paisiy himself and about the last leader of the Zaporizhian Sich. But in addition, they reveal little-known facts about the relationship between these two righteous people. Il. 2. Portrait of the Koshevoy Ataman of the Zaporozhye Sich P. Kalnyshevsky (1691–1803) In essence, these letters are evidence of communication between two ascetics and saints. As you know, Pyotr Kalnyshevsky ended his life as a novice in the Solovetsky Monastery at the age of 113, having previously spent about 25 years in underground confinement. Therefore, the mentioned documents can serve as an important addition to the biography of not only St. Paisius, but also the recently canonized Saint Peter of Kalnyshevsky by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Comm. October 31 / November 13) 9. Despite their value and significance, the letters of St. Paisiy Velichkovsky on the Zaporozhye Sich has still not entered into scientific circulation. Published only once in the little-known Chernivtsi regional literary and artistic publication “Bukovinian Journal” 10, they remained virtually unnoticed in scientific circles. Therefore, when working with materials from the Kosh archive of the Zaporozhian Army, they had to be “discovered” almost anew. Most researchers, working with documents from the Kosh archive (mainly specialists on the Cossacks), did not pay much attention to these letters, since St. Paisiy did not indicate his last name, signing only as “Hegumen Hieromonk Paisiy.” To establish that it was Paisiy Valichkovsky, it was necessary to conduct a separate study. However, apparently, this was not the task of researchers of the history of the Cossacks who worked with the materials of the Kosh archive. Therefore, often citing quotes from these letters (in particular, A. Skalkovsky, F. Makarevsky, D. Yavornitsky and others), they did not pay attention to the fact that the author they quoted was the famous Paisiy Velichkovsky 11. There is no mention of the letters of St. Paisiy and in the description of the affairs of the archive of Kosh of the Zaporozhian Army, which was published as a separate volume. It is only noted here that the case in which the letters of St. Paisius, contains “letters, passports, powers issued to monks who came from Macedonia, Wallachia, Russia, Mount Athos and Ukraine to Zaporozhye to collect donations for the construction of churches, maintenance of the clergy, etc.” 12 Thus, valuable documents that shed light on the relationship between St. Paisiy Velichkovsky and the Zaporozhye Sich, still remain poorly researched and unknown to a wide range of readers. In the Kosh archive there are letters from St. Paisiya was not singled out as a separate case, being filed by the Sich clerks in the general case for 1764–1774. entitled “About those who come to the Zaporozhye Sich from various monasteries and parish churches to ask for mercy from well-governers. Established in 1768. No. 283" 13 . In this form it has been preserved to this day. Il. 3. Seal of the Dragomirn Monastery on letters to St. Paisiya to P. Kalnyshevsky, 1768 The materials of this case contain 6 letters from St. Paisiya to the Zaporozhye Sich. They were written by him from the Bukovina Holy Spirit Monastery in Dragomirna (modern Romania) in the period from 1768 to 1772. In particular, two letters are dated June 1768, two letters are dated January 1771, and two letters are dated March 1772. All documents were signed personally by Rev. Paisiy, and two of them, for June 1768, are sealed with the original monastery round seal, which depicts the scene of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, and around the circle there is an inscription in the Slavic language with the following content: “Seal of the Dragomirna cenobitic monastery of the Descent of the Holy Spirit” 14.
