The International Institute of Athos Heritage in Ukraine (MIANU) is a scientific and public non-profit organization that unites both Ukrainian and foreign scientists and researchers, as well as public figures interested in Athos, its history and spiritual heritage. The objectives of the organization include studying the spiritual and cultural influence of Holy Mount Athos in the history and culture of Ukraine and Central-Eastern Europe, promoting the revival and popularization of the Athonite Orthodox spiritual and cultural-historical heritage; interaction and cooperation with spiritual, cultural and religious centers on Holy Mount Athos, scientific, public and spiritual-educational organizations and institutions; international scientific cooperation, attracting scientists, researchers, public, political figures and entrepreneurs to the study and popularization of the Athonite cultural and historical heritage in Ukraine; carrying out search and research work in the archives of Ukraine and abroad in order to find documents relating to Holy Mount Athos, its influence and connections in Ukraine, writing relevant studies, articles, books, publishing and distributing them. The honorary chairman of MIANU is Anthony-Emil N. Tahiaos (Thessaloniki, Greece) – Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens, Honored Professor of the University of Thessaloniki. Aristotle, foreign member of the Serbian and Bulgarian Academies of Sciences, author of numerous studies on Mount Athos and its heritage. The director of MIANU is Sergei Viktorovich Shumilo. The organization has a Scientific Council, which includes scientists from Ukraine and abroad who study the history and heritage of Athos. The organization has representatives in Greece, France, Great Britain, Italy, and Russia. Works closely with a number of monasteries on Mount Athos. The Institute is searching for documents in the archives of Ukraine that confirm the historical, spiritual and cultural ties between Ukraine and Athos; a number of international conferences, information and educational projects, etc. are planned. The scientific almanac “Athos Heritage” is being published. In 2014, in Chernigov, MIANU held an international conference “Rus and Athos: a millennium of spiritual and cultural ties,” in which more than 80 scientists from around the world took part.
