Volume 2 The collection includes reports presented at the IX Theophan readings, dedicated to the study of the spiritual and theological heritage of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky. The readings took place on October 22–23, 2015 in Moscow at the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church and at the Assumption-Vyshensky Monastery. The Appendix contains selected reports delivered on January 26, 2016 as part of the XXIV International Christmas educational readings at the seminar for students of spiritual and secular higher educational institutions “The Spiritual Heritage of St. Theophan the Recluse”, as well as reports at the scientific conference “The Life and Works of St. Theophan the Recluse - in History and Modernity”, which was held on June 21, 2016 in Moscow in Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church. On October 22–23, 2015, in Moscow, the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Dormition Vyshensky Monastery hosted the IX Theophan readings, dedicated to the study of the spiritual and theological heritage of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky. The work of the scientific conference took place in the anniversary year - when, with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', the 200th anniversary of the birth of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky, was celebrated at the church-wide level. The Feofanov Readings were first held in 2007, and from that time on they became annual. At the third Theophan readings, held at the Dormition Vyshensky Monastery in 2009, an “Appeal to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus'” was adopted, which, in particular, spoke of the need for a comprehensive program to prepare for the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the saint and the announcement of 2015 as the year of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky. One of the main provisions of the program for preparing anniversary events is preparation for the publication of the Complete Collection of the Works of St. Theophan. This initiative was supported by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church at a meeting on May 27, 2010 and received the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Since 2010, the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Scientific Editorial Council for the publication of the Complete Works of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky, have been co-organizers of the Readings. An important event of the past year was the presentation of the first volume of “The Chronicle of the Life and Works of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky,” which was prepared by the Scientific Editorial Council for the publication of the Complete Collection of the Works of St. Theophan at the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church. Presenting the publication, Chairman of the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, Chairman of the Scientific Editorial Council for the publication of the Complete Works of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky, Metropolitan of Kaluga and Borovsk Clement noted: “The prepared “Chronicle” is not just a commemorative, anniversary publication, but the fruit of painstaking five-year work of church and secular scientists who made a lot of efforts to carry out this large-scale project. When working on the first volume of the Chronicle, the archival group worked through a large array of previously unknown archival documents. Thanks to new materials collected in the archives of Russia, near and far abroad, including in Jerusalem and the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos, it was possible to clarify many facts of the biography of St. Theophan, discover new ideas and themes in his work, and discover works previously unknown to the general reader. The edition of the first volume of the Chronicle presented today is of a scientific nature, but this does not make it inaccessible to the average reader. The main task of the publication is to introduce as many modern readers as possible to the life and spiritual heritage of St. Theophan.” The Assumption Vyshensky Monastery has prepared for publication collections of reports based on the results of the Feofanov Readings, which took place in 2009–2015. This publication continues the publication of scientific reports presented as part of the IX Feofanov Readings. The reports were promptly posted on the website of the Dormition Vyshensky Monastery (www.svtheofan.ru), on the website of the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church (www.izdatsovet.ru), as well as on the website of the Scientific Editorial Council for the publication of the works of St. Theophanica (www.theophanica.ru). The Appendix contains selected reports delivered on January 26, 2016 within the framework of the XXIV International Christmas educational readings at the seminar of students of spiritual and secular higher educational institutions “Spiritual Heritage of St. Theophan the Recluse”, as well as reports at the scientific conference “The Life and Works of St. Theophan the Recluse - in History and Contemporaneity”, which was held on June 21, 2016 in Moscow in Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
