This year marks 130 years since the creation of the Vyshensko-Kuplinsky school in 1886 with the blessing of St. Theophan, the Recluse of Vyshensky, through the labors and concerns of Archimandrite Arkady, abbot of the Assumption Vyshensky Monastery.
From the archives of the Tambov Ecclesiastical Consistory: “Half a mile from the monastery, across the Tsnoi River, in the village of Kuplya, there is a monastery estate, on which a parish school was opened in 1886. At first it was located in an old wooden house, and by the end of 1890 a stone 2-story house was built for it... The school was renamed a second-grade school.”
The Collection of Materials and Statistical Information on Public Education in the Tambov Province for 1901 states that the 2-story stone, iron-roofed building of the Vyshensko-Kuplinskaya school of the Shatsk district was its own, built for the school at the expense of the monastery. Number of classrooms – 4 (110, 110, 99, 99 sq. arsh.). The number of students in 1901 was 82 people. Up to seventy students from among the poorest peasant children lived in a school boarding school at the expense of the Vyshenskaya Hermitage. Hundreds of students received not only primary education in Kupla, but most importantly, Christian education.
Before the revolution of 1917, the school was under the care of the monastery. Children were raised in this school until 2002: in the period from 1936 to 2002, 2845 people graduated from the school, of which 38 graduates received a gold medal, 60 graduates received a silver medal.
What path can be chosen to revive this school in the context of modern problems and the difficult demographic situation and the understanding that, according to the words of St. Theophan, education is possible only with proper spiritual upbringing?
The answer to this question is devoted to the “Project for the creation of a specialized boarding school for gifted socially vulnerable children from rural areas - “Vyshensko-Kuplinskaya specialized cadet boarding school with in-depth study of physics, mathematics and military-applied sciences.”
President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation E.M. Primakov noted: “In the development of the human resources potential of Russian society... the problem of creating an integral system for selecting and nurturing gifted youth is acquiring particular importance in the current period. There is no doubt that Russia is still rich in talent. In Western countries, it is becoming common practice for several specialized foundations to compete to establish patronage over a talented schoolchild. Now, on the initiative of President Barack Obama, such funds are increasingly being reoriented to help gifted children from low-income families. Isn’t this approach relevant for Russia?” 841.
1. The need to create specialized industry boarding schools
Similar programs are also successfully implemented in China, Brazil and a number of other countries, where several specialized foundations that exist at universities, research centers and commercial firms compete to establish patronage over talented children. In Brazil, vocational education is provided by specialized schools at scientific centers, for which they train personnel according to specially developed programs. As a result, graduates have both general and specialized education, which allows them to become highly qualified specialists in their profession.
2. What are the prerequisites for creating specialized schools in Russia?
In the modern geopolitical situation, identifying talented children and supporting their education is an integral part of the overall strategy for each developed state to maintain its position, as well as the prospects for further forward movement. Without caring for children, especially gifted ones, our country has no future.
According to Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of June 1, 2012 No. 761 “On the national strategy of action in the interests of children for 2012–2017,” the creation of a national resource center for working with gifted children is provided. Many official documents emphasize the urgent need to identify gifted children and provide conditions for the development of their talents for the benefit of our country.
Taking into account the large territory of the Russian Federation, a number of negative trends in the situation of family and childhood, as well as the demographic factor, it seems quite promising to create specialized sectoral boarding schools, where children, including gifted ones, could receive high-quality education and spiritual and moral upbringing.
3. Which school could become a pilot site for a Rosatom school?
National security, as well as the development of new technologies in our century, are impossible without the use of nuclear energy. When setting goals for the future, it is necessary to be prepared for the challenges of the time and, therefore, provide yourself with an uninterrupted supply of young qualified specialists. Relying on their spontaneous influx would apparently be extremely risky, especially considering the “hunt” that some countries have launched for our promising young scientists and engineers.

State educational institution "Moscow Cadet Music Corps" (Moscow).
5. Why was the cadet form of education chosen?
Cadet education has accumulated extensive historical experience and today is one of the most effective forms of training. The busyness of many parents often leaves children without parental attention and supervision, effectively making them half-orphans. The deprivation complex that arises is aggravated by the influence of the Internet, television, the street and the search for entertainment. In such conditions, the teenager cannot cope with the negative phenomena of life.
He doesn't know how to resist them. What should you be like? Who should I imitate? What to strive for? What life guidelines should you choose?
For the correct spiritual and moral orientation of adolescents, there is a cadet school, where there is constant pedagogical support, where next to the student there is a teacher, wise with life and professional experience.
In addition, targeted training of children in general education disciplines is carried out in combination with physical, spiritual and patriotic education. This system of education and upbringing brings good results.
6. Why boarding school?
This seems appropriate from at least two points of view. Firstly, being a specialized educational institution, a boarding school can provide gifted students from different regions of Russia with everything they need. Secondly, this is justified due to the difficult demographic situation of this region, as evidenced by the understaffing of schools in nearby villages and towns. Some children are forced to travel many kilometers from home to school every day.
7. How will the enrollment of children into the boarding school be carried out?
Successful recruitment is possible subject to close interaction between boarding school staff and employees of primary secondary schools and preschool institutions, as well as parents. Candidates for admission to a boarding school must undergo appropriate testing, which makes it possible to more accurately identify the inclinations that children have. Since the scope of a boarding school is not limited by any administrative boundaries, it is quite possible (and desirable) to search for and recruit gifted children from various regions of the Russian Federation, including from orphanages.
8. What is the current state of the school?
Currently, the school in the village of Kuplya is closed. The school building was transferred to the Skopin and Shatsk diocese. On the part of the diocese, there is a readiness to resolve legal issues regarding the revival of this school.
This project involves the reconstruction of the school building in accordance with modern requirements; opening on the basis of the school an educational institution (cadet boarding school) with additional military-applied, scientific and spiritual-moral disciplines. Particular attention is expected to be paid to physical and mathematical disciplines.
We hope that the traditions of this school, laid down by St. Theophan and Archimandrite Arkady, will be continued. Graduates of this school, as in previous years, will take a worthy place in life, serving their Fatherland.
