In this new edition of the works of St. Irenaeus of Lyon in the text of the translation of “Five Books against Heresies” from the Latin by Archpriest. P. Preobrazhensky and from German prof. N. I. Sagarda (“Proof of the Apostolic Preaching”) made the following editorial revisions and improvements:
– pre-revolutionary spelling has been translated into modern one, the translation style and its vocabulary have also been edited;
– in the text of “Five Books against Heresies” words are enclosed in square brackets that are not in the edition of Archpriest. P. Preobrazhensky, but which were added when editing the translation for a clearer understanding of the meaning;
– in names and titles, the Greek pronunciation of Reuchlin is replaced by the pronunciation of Erasmus of Rotterdam. In Reuchlin's pronunciation, the most familiar names and names are preserved: Jesus (according to Erasmus it should be Iesus), Jerusalem (according to Erasmus it should be Jerusalem), etc.;
– references to Holy Scripture have been checked, corrected and supplemented:
a) as a rule, quotes from Holy Scripture by St. Irenaeus corresponds to the ancient Greek text (quotes from the book of the prophet Daniel - according to Theodotion's translation, other Old Testament quotes - according to the Septuagint) 1 ;
b) sometimes quotes from St. Irenaeus differs from the text of Holy Scripture. Compared to the previous edition, similar places have been found and provided with appropriate footnotes. In some cases, in order to better understand the thought of St. Irenea, we turned to the Hebrew original. Also, where necessary, the notes from the previous edition have been supplemented.
c) in the footnotes to “Five Books Against Heresies” and “Passages from Lost Works,” additions of references to Holy Scripture, as well as editor’s notes, are printed with the note Ed. , and in the Proof of the Apostolic Preaching additional references are placed in square brackets;
- an index of biblical quotations has been compiled throughout the text of the works of St. Irenea;
– in the text “Proofs of the Apostolic Preaching” there are headings for individual chapters of the work.
Abbreviations for the works of St. Irenaeus is given as follows: PE - “Five Books Against Heresies”; AP - “Proof of the Apostolic Preaching”, Rev. - excerpts from the lost works of St. Irenea.
Therefore, we recommend that the reader look at the footnotes on the Old Testament books according to the Church Slavonic translation of the Bible, and not according to the Synodal translation.
